Burial Ground at

Providence Missionary Baptist Church

Providence Missionary Baptist Church is located about 5 miles southwest of Winchester at the end of Old Stone Church Road.  The church was established in Clark County as a Baptist congregation in 1784.  In 1872, the white church members moved to a new location and sold the Old Stone Church to an African American congregation that has worshipped there ever since.  The founders of the black congregation mostly lived in the vicinity of the church and many had long associations with the old church dating back to slavery times.  After abolition, they parted ways with the white congregation, where even after freedom they had a decidedly second class status with restrictions such as seating only in the balcony.

The burials listed below are marked by legible gravestones.  There are numerous additional burials without gravestones.  These are ordinarily identified by death certificates that list the burial place as “Howard’s Creek” or a similar descriptor.  A list of those who are believed to be buried at this cemetery based on either a gravestone or a death certificate may be seen at the Find-A-Grave webpages maintained by Lyndon Comstock for “Old Stone Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.”  The site also includes photographs of gravestones and individual biographical information.  To date, about eighty individuals beyond those listed below are included at this website, the great majority of whom are African Americans.
